| | Miraculous Invocation to Saint Therese
O glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and counsel mankind, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. So powerful are you in obtaining every need of body and soul our Holy Mother Church proclaims you a "Prodigy of Miracles...the Greatest Saint of Modern Times." Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth...of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Henceforth, dear Little Flower, I will fulfill your plea "to be made known everywhere" and I will never cease to lead others to Jesus through you.
Amen.
The relics of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus visited our town, Bangued last February 5th. The carrier arrived at Saint James the Elder Cathedral at around noontime with hundreds of parishioners anxiously waiting.
Interestingly, Saint Therese is the patron saint of Peñarrubia. |

I love Abra simply because it is home. It's a wonderful province, just marred by dirty politics. Nonetheless, Abra is beautiful and I <3 it no matter what. iloveabra.wmv (14.5 MB)
Because green is the "in" thing now, we too are plunging into the green wave. Little things or "baby steps" that can make a big difference or "a giant leap" towards slowing the warming of this planet we call home. We challenge all the tweens (ages 7-14), teens and twentysomethings (ages 15-30) to do their part to reduce or totally erase their own carbon footprints. I (your name here) pledge: - to recycle paper and other recyclable goods;
- to reuse things such as bottles, cans, etc.;
- to unplug electric appliances when not in use;
- to unplug my cellphone, mp3 player or other personal electronics as soon as they are finished charging;
- to turn off unnecessary lights;
- to replace traditional light bulbs with efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs);
- to take shorter showers;
- to carpool, walk, bike instead of using my car/motorcycle/tricycle;
- to clean my surroundings and dispose my garbage properly;
- to eat locally-grown food;
- to support the restaurants/eateries that help local farmers;
- to plant more trees and flowering plants;
- to buy products with less packaging and those in containers that can be recycled;
- to donate clothes to charity or swap them with friends or family;
- to shop wisely.
Additionally, Abra is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to rapid global warming. Why? Because its economy is mainly based on agriculture. Our drinking water depends from natural springs and rivers. Our food sources come from the bounty around us - the rivers, seas, fields and mountains. Think about doing your part. Encourage your family and friends to do the same. And there is no better time to act than NOW.

| | Its neo-gothic facade and church design was sketched by Brother Arnulf Rademaker, a German SVD missionary carpenter who also redesigned the Bangued Cathedral's facade and belltower. Read the Ilocano story about Doña Rosa Vasquez and this small church's construction here.
Below are some excerpts from the book "Along the Mission Trails in the Philippines" by Rev. Bruno Hagspiel, SVD pp. 139-140 and also quoted in "History of the SVD - Abra Mission in the Philippines 1909-1956" by Rev. Fr. Miguel Hergesheimer, SVD pp. 48-49.
Protestanism had made but little headway in the capital town of Bangued. When Aglipayanism attempted to secure a foothold in Bangued, Divine Providence interfered. The Aglipayan priest became involved in a quarrel with Gregorio Aglipay, its founder who thereupon suspended him. To get even, the priest took a wife and sold the church with all its goods and chattels.
The above event helped Apo Doro (Fr. Theodore Buttenbruch) to bring back many erring sheep into the fold. Eight thousand souls returned, and the big church began to prove inadequate to accommodate the growing number of Christians. So the good priest Apo Doro seriously considered erecting a new church for the Christians in the western section of the town. Certain noble souls declared themselves willing to undertake this project. Particularly, the kind hearted and generous women who gave unselfishly to the project were Francisca Vasquez and her sister Rosa, and Engracia Beneza and her sister Placida. They practiced great self denials in order to bring about the building of this church. Francisca displayed the keenest interest of the group to adorn the high altar. She procured a five feet crucifix from Manila. Apo Doro blessed it, but meantime, while the church was still being built, she has to keep it in her room and prayed before it night and day. Here she often expressed the wish that she be buried at its foot.
But every stone added to the new chapel added fuel to the hatred of many enemies of the Faith who were determined to stop it. As Francisca was the prime mover, she was selected to become the victim of Satan's malice. One night, while the rain poured down in torrents and the town was submerged in inky darkness (no light to be seen, save the flickering taper before the crucifix in Francisca's room), four assassins broke into Francisca's house, plunged a dagger into this noble woman and also killed her woman servant. There, at the foot of her crucifix, she laid, her heart pierced as had been her Saviour's.
An outcry of horror arose from the whole community when the news of this detestable murder was known. During her interment, many followed her corpse to its last resting place. Her beautiful crucifix was yet to be installed over the high altar as soon as the church will be completed. It had been planned to be dedicated to the Church on May 3, 1922, but her murder brought indescribable diffuculties. For two years the building of the Church was stalled, the structure stood uncovered. There seemed to be no money forthcoming to furnish a roof or any of the other necessary building materials for its completion. |
When was the last time your barangay held a Santacruzan?
Unfortunately in Bangued, the tradition is fast becoming a thing of the past. No longer are there babbalasangs ken balasitangs looking forward for their first Santacruzans.
I remember asking my cousin why we no longer see Santacruzans these past few years and she jokingly said, "Baka natay amin nga bab-baketen." (Maybe all the old women have long been dead.) Hmm, maybe she was right.
But I'm no pessimist. I'll continue to daydream and look forward for that summer when barangay fiestas usually have paradas during the day and Santacruzans past dinnertime.
This video footage was taken in 2001 during Zone 3's Barangay Fiesta. I believe it was one of the last Santacruzans held in Bangued for the last five years. santacruzanbangued.wmv (28.6 MB)
